On the quartz plate, the edge rhombic boron nitride crystal with a thickness of only 1 to 3 microns is as slim as a cicada’s wing. Still, its energy performance is 100 to 10,000 times greater than that of typical optical crystals. This is the thinnest known optical crystal in the world invented by Chinese scientists. At the opening event of the 2024 Zhongguancun Forum Yearly Satisfying held on April 25, this crystal was released as a significant accomplishment.
Academician Wang Enge of the Quantum Products Scientific Research Facility of the College of Physics of Peking University, Professor Liu Kaihui of the Institute of Condensed Issue Physics and Materials Physics, and Hong Hao, a particularly appointed associate scientist, and other scientists have produced a new crystal layout approach: by turning each piece of rhombic boron nitride material at a particular angle like turning a Rubik’s Dice, the stacked optical crystal can reduce the energy intake of laser going through and effectively create the required laser.

The crystal design concept originated by Chinese scientists is incorporated with the prep work approach to effectively “slim down” the optical crystal to 1 to 3 microns. The thickness of standard optical crystals is in the millimeter to centimeter level.
